And Then Still Here…

...just passing the days with ever mounting excitement as we edge ever closer to budget day and we’ll all discover how far into our pockets them wot would rule over us are going to stuff their hands this time.
In other ‘news’ I see one time use vaping thingies will become illegal to sell next year. The reason being kids are buying ‘em and also the litter side of things. I do believe they’re not to be sold to kids already and regards the littering, well, see post regards school kids litter picking.
Funnily, it seems it’ll still be legal to import ‘em but illegal to sell ‘em. Not sure how that works.
Anyhoo it’s just one more thing folk enjoy wot must be banned and I do believe there’s a motion{?} moving through parliament that could be passed into law soon that’ll make it illegal to smile in public..
   Wot the hay, enjoy the ride;

And Then Way Back I Go…

From wot I hear about that speech{?} by Steer Calmer It would seem he could’ve just used one line along the lines of, “So to all you elderly folk and mid income workers, you aint seen nufink yet.”
Then, lo and behold
, it starts. Going for growth you say TTK? Let’s ban smoking in pub beer gardens thus starting the race for growth by killing off the hospitality industry. Wot a wondrous plan by a wondrous plank.
Ban smoking in outside spaces? That sent me back to 2014 for an old post so here he be:
Sorry, this is a smoking related post so may I humbly suggest any Timidadians should leave now before they get tainted. Thank you. Careful; mind the ‘Q’ key!! There you go; yes, over that way. Thank you.
Right, I’ve been pondering a couple of words oft used by the public health people in their quest to stop the whole wide world from smoking and those words would be, ‘normalizing’ and ‘de-normalising’. Thus may I present a pretend tale showing that those two words can be very confusing dependent on which way you’re looking at the time. Ready? Sitting comfy?
There’s a big city and in this big city is a jolly big pub close to a subway station. Lots of people, upon finishing work at 17:00, stop at this pub for a quick drink prior to catching the train at 22:00. Pardon? An earlier train you say? I’ll get to that.
Let’s pretend that, of the pubs total clientele, 100 like a smoke. Let’s further pretend that these 100 smokers are always outside on the pavement together.
A none smoking, drinking fellow has to pass by the pub on his way to the station to catch the earlier train at 17:30. Let’s call this person ‘Boring’. Boring reflects, every evening, how disgustingly normalising it was to see so many smokers, looks like a hundred of ‘em, outside the pub but he’s heard that the wahoos at the WHO are campaigning vigorously to de-normalise smoking. Boring, being a non-smoker, is unaware that the WHO’s de-normalising intent was to drive smokers outside where it unintentionally became normal for Boring and passers-by of all ages to see large groups of de-normalised smokers innocently normalising smoking.
Of the 100 smoky drinkers 75 really want to quit so they could sit inside on rainy or windy or rainy and windy evenings so they glued nicotine patches to themselves. Of these folk, going on the documented poor success rate of these patches, three finally manage to quit thus leaving just 97 smokers in the wild.
Boring passes by and notices not a jot of difference and still longs for the WHO to do that de-normalised thingy quickly as he’s concerned to see so many children pass by the smokers and fears they’ll become normalised smokers.
Then, as if by magic, along comes a bit o’ kit that’s quite possibly the most successful aid yet in helping people wean away from tobacco - vaping appliances – herein after called e-cigs.
The 97 remaining smokers decide to give it a go and of these, and a reasonable figure to use for a success rate would appear to be 23%, a further 22, okay 22 and a little bit of one, are now inside with the added help of the pub owner, a reasonable chap with a good grasp of common sense and business, who’s redesignated the old, long unused Smoking Room as a No Children Allowed Vaping Area.
When Boring now passes by he’s delighted to see a dramatic depletion of smokers outside the pub and comments to his friends that it was fast approaching the point where crossing the road to avoid allegedly deadly second-hand smoke and that horrible nicotine saturated brickwork was becoming unnecessary and further remarks to his chums, “Wow!! That WHO de-normalising smokers seems like it’s really hitting home now then!! It looks like day by day there are fewer and fewer smokers normalisedly smoking in full public view and tempting kiddies to smoke. Well done ’ol de-normalising wahoos!”
A moderately happy outcome you’d assume, with the pub full, Boring and other passers-by, and let’s not forget the kids, only having their delicate senses assailed occasionally by a slack hand-full of hard-core smokers and the WHO fellows absolutely delighted at the prospect of the totally unexpected success of their primary reason for existence; improving health.
Sadly but unsurprisingly, the ‘health’ zealots, rather than being happy with the outcome, became apoplectic with rage as they saw the alarming trend of people thinking and acting out with their strict control parameters and using those fancy, cheap e-cig lookin’ dealy-bobs and, horror of horrors, using ‘em indoors, enjoying themselves and ‘normalising’, as they say, smoking again. After tightening their titanium head-bands to prevent explosions, an emergency meeting of the Wahoos was convened to sort the situation out and to ensure they regained total control of everything. And quickly!!
After lots of hand wringing and further tightening of head-bands, several ideas where put forward such as demonizing second-hand vapour as it had worked so well with smoke. This was dropped after it was pointed out that vapour, unlike smoke, was just the act of exhaling made visible and everyone expels air occasionally. Visible or not. “Nobody’s going to fall for that one.” Said a soon to be fired doubter.
”You sure? You seen some of the crazy stuff we’ve made ‘em believe?”
Then the craziest of the crazy people at the assemblage of craziness announced he had a cunningly crazy plan and recounted it roughly thus: “As these new toys could contain that stuff found in tomatoes, potatoes, cauliflowers and, fortunately for us, tobacco – nicotine – let’s get ‘em classified as tobacco products then we can jolly well get control back and carry on controlling any stuff we want to control!!”
This idea was greeted with wild excitement, the casting off of head-bands and a self congratulatory back-slapping bean and yogurt-fest planned, at the tax payers expense, at a luxuriously appointed tropical resort.
However, while the WHO-are-you where enjoying their further de-normalising and wresting back of control ‘victory’, back in our dimension, that ol’ ‘not thinking it through’ thingy kicked in.
E-cigs became a tobacco product so vapers where back outside the pub with the remaining smokers. And the guys still struggling with patches? Also outside with the smokers and vapers as nicotine patches had to be called a ‘tobacco product’ or the classification wouldn’t hold water for e-cigs, right? This also entailed more work for the poor Landlord as he now had to ensure nobody entered his premises patched up and diners, who’ve ordered certain vegetables, discover they can only eat them outside.
Thus several unintended consequences' calamitously kicked in:
“You still vaping now they’re taxed into tomorrow?”
”Nah. You seen the price of ‘em now? Why pretend when the proper thing’s are a tad cheaper!”
”How about your pal? Still patched up?”
”Your kidding, right? He ditched the nicotine patches when that tobacco tax got slapped on ‘em in spades and a pack o’ smokes and a patch became prohibitively pricy!”
Our good friend Boring, upon passing by the pub now notes, with sadness, that the de-normalising stuff must’ve been rubbish ‘couse it seems to be back to normal as, for sure, there’s a hundred smoking fools outside the pub again in full, tempting, normalising smoky view of all the passers-by; both young and old alike……
Later in the week, during a brief visit from their own perfect dimension, and noting that all their wild ideas had resulted in nothing more than the completing of a really, really big circle, the boss of the WHO had to admit to his committed, sorry, committee, “You know all that nasty stuff they’ve been saying about us? Well, you know what? It’s true. We really haven’t got a WHO-be-do.”

Quote; Elizabeth Chandler.

And Then Another Ban…

And this is a tricky one but a favourite. Smoking of course.
Wot’ve we got now? Age limit on alcohol, gaming smoking, driving and I’m sure a phew others I’ve forgotten. Now smoking will be banned for those born after a certain date. I see many folk are celebrating this new ‘law’ and none more than the hooks, crooks and comic singers amongst us. Also in the pipeline, I understand, is a ban on drivers below a certain age not to be allowed to carry passengers.
Two things crawl into this old thing wot’s supported by my neck. How will they recoup the huge tax loss that’s generated by tobacco? You don’t need a brain to figure that one. Wrong age to smoke? Okay, I’ll try that vaping thingy. Damn! Will you look at the tax on that kit and the liquid. Whoa, that’s expensive, but...
Number two? How will this smoking and driving and other age/generational related banns be policed? Well, it all leads me to suspect that an ulterior motive is afoot. Yup, just down the road away is the introduction of mandatory digital ID cards. Hay, y’all thought the youthful banns were a good idea, right? So how can you object to ‘our’ way of policing it eh? Gotcha!

And Then The Past Is Back...

First up, a word to Ripper, aint heard from you for a while - nor on Nourishing Obscurity and I’m guessing you’re concentrating on your house renovations. Sure hope this is so old friend.

Well, so, I see smoking’s in the headlines again but this time it’ll be banned by prohibiting it via age until one and all are included. Now I’m just a dumb old man but I can imagine bad boys are already exploring sources for obtaining cheap smokes and the chains for the resale of said smokes. At a profit you think?
Be careful out there as saying or typing the ‘wrong’ thing will land you in big trouble and once we’re all micro chipped be careful wot you even think , okay?
The other day I pondered how long it’ll be before smiling in public becomes an offence. On reflection, I probably got that the wrong way round and we’ll be legally obliged to smile at all times when in public so’s to show we’re so happy to tow the authoritarian utopian line we now have to live by.
Anyhoo, sorry but this news calls for yet another post from the past as per wot’s below for those possibly new to looking through the Foggy Mirror:
Some people will choose to smoke and drink. Some will die youngish, some will die very old. Some folk will choose to eat a lot of what they like, some will die youngish, some will die very old. This could go on for ever with everything, right? Then there are those who will live what the state decrees to be a safe, protected and healthy lifestyle. Surprisingly, some will die youngish and some will die very old.
However, it’s a 100% certainty we’re all going to die and as the last lap gets underway, some will be wondering what they missed and why, while others will be wishing they’d done just that little bit more.
So to all you, “it’s bad for you! I don’t like it so you can’t do it, it’s not healthy so we have to stop it now!” fellows, let me assure you that while you’re possibly just passed ‘Go’ on life’s highway and it looks like a long, almost never ending road ahead with time aplenty to foist your pettiness upon others, try to take on-board wot’s below....
Trust me, when you get to my end of the road two things will become obvious. One, it’s cluttered to hell an’ back with tin cans and two, when you look over your shoulder, back down the road of life, you’ll be amazed at just how short a journey it actually was. Then you’ll realise, too late, what a complete and total waste of your brief, precious time it was being so miserable, hating the enjoyment of others and foisting your misery on those who had a little zest for life and were attempting, against all the odds, to enjoy their brief moment in the sun.

And Then, Normality...

As this nasty bout of flue eases and various restrictions start to be lifted, the MSM are continually at pains to point out that we’re slowly moving towards a new normal as certain restrictions may well be with us for the foreseeable future.

This reminded me of yet another very old post and made me realize that the folk who were probably best prepared and able to handle those draconian flue restrictions were – come on! Who do you think? The lonely elderly? People of colour? The LGBQUETY community? Squirrels? No, it was those much maligned folk of smoke.

Remember a while ago when a few folk decided they didn’t like smoking so demanded nobody should be allowed to smoke in so many places? Remember? Thanks to the MSM program of smoker vilification, nobody wanted to be any closer to a smoker than four meters, never mind two. They were not welcome, or indeed allowed to light-up in any places of entertainment so many didn’t even enter.

So there you have it. Folk of smoke were well used to being  ‘unsociably distanced’ long before it became fashionable and have been living their lives with many  draconian restrictions for years and are well adjusted to wot they can and can’t do. And now the new flue restrictions have come to one and all and as a shock and a bummer to those that previously only wished, nay, demanded restrictions on others but not themselves. Eat it up suckers!

According to the MSM, many folk are suffering severe mental problems owing to the lock-up, isolation and distancing ‘regulations’. It would be the height of poetic justice, would it not, if some of those ‘suffering’ mental anxiety where some of the self-same folk who demanded the isolation and shunning of smokers...

Okay, I vape and don’t use tobacco no more but remember the ‘I don’t like it so you shouldn’t be allowed to do it’ brigade include vapers in their hatred of many forms of enjoyment as well so I quote from yet another old post:

Some people will choose to smoke and drink. Some will die youngish, some will die very old. Some folk will choose to eat a lot of what they like, some will die youngish, some will die very old. This could go on for ever with everything, right?

And Then, Shocked...

In fact very shocked to see the news this morning after my missive of yesterday. According to a parliamentary committee it would appear E-cigarettes are almost a gateway to eternal life. I can only conclude that, like PHE, this committee failed to consult with HMRC before publication. Looks like another fine example of tying oneself in knots.

And where’s ASH in all this? Man, I bet they’re going as mad as a sack o’ rats right now trying to figure out wot to say.

Try Mr Puddlecote for a good take on that.

However, while driving this AM I noticed that the local radio, while reporting this news, did manage to find ten random folk in the street to interview all of whom thought E-cigs were disgusting as of course were those who chose to use them so good BBC balance there then.

Is this a game changer? I’m not convinced and wonder if it’s part of a grand plan using a little reverse phycology as it’s quite possible the Minister for Screwing Stuff Up just happened to look through the Foggy Mirror last night and thought to himself, ‘Damn! they’re on to us. New plan needed. You, get down to the storeroom quick! We need more smoke and mirrors out there!’

Hell, where’s that roll of tin foil gone...

And Then A Natty Tin Foil Bonnet...

...and it’s firmly planted on my swede as I type. About wot? E-cigarettes.

You noticed how it’s starting to play out? This is my tin foil adorned take on it so don’t expect anything serious, okay?

It started with governments  looking for another money stream so they got a bucket and labelled it ‘Pleasure’. Who to hit? Got it! Tobacco users. There’s millions of ‘em! Hay, we need an excuse though. No problem. Health; and we’ll get help from a ‘study’ from a friendly source ‘proving’ that tobacco’s a killer. Then we can say, we’re here to help you stop by pricing tobacco products out of your reach and also preventing kiddies starting. Yes, you will thank us.

As anticipated, some folk stopped using tobacco but, as also anticipated, not in any huge numbers thus the Pleasure tax bucket continued to fill.

Then, out of left field, e-cigarettes popped up and were mostly ignored by government and most tobacco users and the number of folk dropping tobacco for e-cigs wasn’t really significant and made no discernible difference to the bucket.

Shortly thereafter, proving once again that governments and the various branches thereof don’t communicate, Public Health England published the results of a ‘study’ that ‘suggested’ e-cigs were in excess of ninety percent ‘safer’ than tobacco products. One can only imagine the phone call they received from the revenue office the day they dropped that bombshell...

Anyhoo, as a result, smokers started switching in huge numbers partly due to tobacco prices and partly due to the announcement by PHE.

The switch to e-cigs accelerated apace and too late the government realised the Pleasure bucket had a gaping great hole in it dear Liza, dear Liza. Damn! Wot to do? It’s all about health, right? Outlaw the item that’s enabling many to stop smoking? Damn! We’ll look like utter clowns if we do that. Damn! Wot to do...

Okay says government, let’s phone a ‘friend’, one that’s looking for a bribe – sorry, funding - and get them to produce a ‘study’ and leak it to the press suggesting that vaping may have hidden risks.

After that, slowly over time, so as not to look like the dumb asses we actually are, we’ll ramp up the vaping bad for your health message until the time we can safely step in and announce that, in the interests of the public’s health, we plan to level the playing field and tax all vaping kit and liquids the same as tobacco products thus keeping our health virtue signalling credentials intact while rather than just plugging the hole in the Pleasure Tax Bucket, we’ll need a far, far bigger bucket dear Liza, dear Liza. JD; doubles all round.

As I’ve typed many times, it’s not often I’m right and I’m probably wrong again but I’m bookmarking this page for future reference as I feel the games afoot.

And Then A Thought...

You’ve probably noticed that LGBTQUERTY news has been front and centre for the MSM today such as wot is linked below. A 75 point plan costing four and a half mill? One has to ask, is that really enough??

A 75-point plan to improve the lives of LGBT people, costing £4.5m, has been produced in response to the survey.

See how a small, but vocal group has, in pretty short order, got the government, of all persuasions, {Pun?} doing double back flips to appease some minority moaning?

Anyhoo, here’s a thought. Let’s use their ‘importance’ to see wot an ignored majority group could achieve.

And that would be? Well, the next time you spot a couple of chaps - or chapesses – in a pub all cuddled up, go over and encourage them to - wait for it - light a fag... sorry, light a cigarette. And that would end how? They’ll be told to put ‘em out or get out damn pronto resulting in them and the LGBTQUERTY ‘community’ sending Twatter into  a total meltdown with righteous indignation as they fumed {pun?} at the shocking treatment they’d received just because they were wearing rainbow makeup, cuddling and smoking  and how, like, totally embarrassed and hurt they felt as they’d had their ‘human rights’ abused and had cried and cried and cried all the long night through.

Going on recent appeasements to minority groups, this should result in the government  and public health folk quickly twisting themselves into all kinds of contortions and before you could say, what a gay day, they’d be announcing the relaxation of a lot of those smoking bans and apologising, unreservedly, to all the QUERTY folk for unintentionally being so beastly to them and thus signalling their virtue by bending to the demands of a vocal - and currently in favour - minority group. Win. And some shutdown pubs may reopen. Win.

Things in this country are so far ‘out there’ these days, I wouldn’t mind betting it’d work. You know wot? For good measure, get someone from an ethnic minority into the mix to guarantee a slam dunk.

And Then, Back Of A Fag Packet...

Further to the last post wherein I suggested that the governmental panel on alternative nicotine delivery systems would result in taxing situations, I thought I’d do a little light amateur investigation and it quickly became obvious why the government have suddenly jumped up and taken notice. I apologise in advance if I’ve made any figure blunders below.

In the linked Bloomberg article a figure of three million vapours was mentioned. This figure must be taken with a pinch of snuff as nobody contacted me so should the figure be three million and one? Is it less than three million? Or is it four million? For the purpose of my ‘in depth’ research I decided to be ultra conservative. Three million? Let’s call it two million. Of those, many will be dual use folk so I further reduced the figure to a lowly one million who’ve switched to vaping, just vaping, and dumped smokes completely.

Further intense research conducted by typing into Google, seemed to suggest that the tax on a pack of twenty is £6.98. Okay, after picking myself up I decided to call it a mere – mere? £6. So it seems for the three packs a week I used to smoke I was ‘giving’ the government £18. That is £18 they don’t get from me anymore so the government’s £18 a week worse off; big deal, right?

Anyhoo, I’m betting you can see where this is going. Of course you can. Forget the proper quitters and those who’ve found ‘alternative’ supply streams, let’s just consider our low estimate of those who’ve switched to vaping.   Let’s further say that those one million converts used to average three packs o’ smokes each a week and – boom!! The government’s losing £18,000,000 a week. After a further couple of hours with a calculator and six A4 pads and three pens, that came to £936,000,000 per year. And that £936,000,000 would be an absolute minimum figure per year that’s disappeared, in a puff of vapour, from the grasp of the exchequer.

And we should believe that the governmental panel is being formed to explore the health and safety aspects of alternative nicotine delivery systems? Really? Yeah, right. Ticktock - tax.

And Then An Enquiry...

While doing my morning meander to check out wot had been caught in the Web whilst I was abed, I found this bit from Bloomberg.

The U.K. parliament opened a panel to establish the health and economic impact of electronic cigarettes and heat-not-burn devices as the number of people using such products approaches 3 million.
The inquiry will seek to address gaps in the understanding of e-cigarettes and assess the suitability of current regulations for the devices.

See how it works? Millions of folk have found something that satisfies them, is comparatively risk free and, compared to tobacco products, stupidly cheap, with hundreds more ditching smokes for e-cigs  every day  and, as if by magic, the government think, ‘Oh-oh. Better plan a panel then.’

Trust me on this, when their ‘report’ is finally published, way down in the small print will be the ‘conclusion’ that with the dramatic drop in sales of burning tobacco products due to the take-up of e-cigs and non-combustible tobacco kit, the government is losing a large, and daily increasing, chunk o’ revenue thus they recommend, for many weird and made-up reasons,  that vaping and non hot tobacco kit should be taxed commensurate with all the other things out here that give a little light relief and pleasure to folk. How very dare people enjoy something while bypassing the grasping hand of government.

Ignore this picture, it’s just something that may interest that chap over at Head Rambles. Actually, I may have got this wrong and it’s not a graph but just a pictorial representation using figures linked from the calculations... Sorry about that. Hay, I did it a long time ago, okay? I do seem to remember it started life as a simple bar chart and that’s graph, right?

And Then A Brindley...

This is a reflection on how strangely the human mind works. Okay, my mind then.

I finished typing yesterday and sent all the letters I’d typed out to the web-a-Net hoping all the letters were in some sort of order, then, later, I thought back to one sentence I’d used, ‘Smoking hadn’t been invented.’ This sent my mind back to the distant past and the thought I had was that I could’ve used a more fun phrase with a link.

To prove to myself I’d got it right, I did a Googly for ‘Brindley’ with no success regarding wot I was expecting. Wot to do? Broaden the search criteria was the cleaver idea I came up with and eventually I had success. However, imagine my surprise to discover that since the very first time I heard this ditty, in days of yore, I have always had Brindley in ma’ heed.

Anyhoo, the amended sentence should read something along the lines, ‘Molly Windley wasn’t about.’

Go back in time with me and smile along with the Singing Postman.

WARNING: Timidadians, DON’T DO IT!! This goes back to gentler times you wouldn’t understand. Times of no fuss, no muss. No snowflakes; no safe spaces. To times way before ASH and Tobacco Control started to rule the world and before our lives became categorised by varying combinations of letters such as PC, SJW, LGBTBDTQID, non-binary compliancy and so much other trendy stifling stuff. There was however, some fun in the world... How did it all go so horribly wrong?

And Then Another Professor...

During a little car meandering yesterday, with the radio tuned to a local station, I caught a bit of an interview with a university professor who, it was stated, was one of the worlds leading experts in – you ready for this? – coughing.

In amongst all the talk I did notice that the good prof stated that, during his studies, he’d discovered that nicotine seemed very good for alleviating persistent coughing. He said that this was kind o’ sad as hot smoke was a major cause of coughing. He went on to state that the new nicotine delivery systems, read E-cigs, were seen by many as a way to radically reduce coughing spasms. I got a bit lost in his hot smoke/nicotine reasoning round about this time...

However, the kicker for me was when he stated that nine out of every ten coughers that had followed his recommendations had seen vast improvements in their general coughing demeanour. And here’s the really refreshing kicker. The good professor concluded by saying that, sadly, it meant he still had to shoot the one in every ten who got no relief.

What a lovely non PC line from a prof no less. And on the BBC to boot. Could it be the new broom Trumpton effect? Wouldn’t that be nice, and he’s only been sweeping for a couple o’ days!

It was also interesting to note, this being the BBC interviewing an academic an’ all, that there was absolutely no mention that Brexit will decimate the prof’s funding relating to his essential research or that a Trumpton administration will probably be the death knell of coughing research worldwide.

And Then, Please, Just Stop It...

I see kids have now been recruited to tell grownups to stop smoking. How sad is that then?

How old are you? You remember when grownups used to tell kids not to smoke? I do and that’s why we had to hide to smoke. Now, if this catches on, big people are going to have to hide from little people to have a smoke. Pardon? You’re right; I suppose so many places don’t allow smoking anymore, grownups have to hide to smoke already.

There was a guy, well, no more than a child himself, on the news saying how he thought the new ‘initiative’ was the absolute bees-knees. It left me wondering how these fellows get into these positions where they’re free to screech about how much they hate something so it shouldn’t be allowed. How do they get there?

Amazing how so many of us got to where we are today with all that we did on the way; all with little to no hindrance from  nanny. Hell, as old as I am, I crossed three busy roads today, unaided, and made it safely back to the sofa.

Time, I think - for all the notice these types will take - to revisit a very old post a bit of wot's below.

So all you, ‘it’s bad for you - I don’t like it so you can’t do it - it’s not healthy - we have to stop it now!’ fellows, let me assure you that while you’re possibly just passed ‘start’ on life’s highway and it looks like a long, almost never ending road ahead with time aplenty to foist your pettiness upon others, try to take on-board wot’s below....

Trust me, when you get to my end of the road two things will become obvious. One, it’s cluttered to hell an’ back with tin cans and, two, when you look over your shoulder, back down the road of life, you’ll realise just how short a journey it actually was. Then you’ll understand, too late, what a complete and total waste of your brief time it was being so miserable, hating the enjoyment of others and trying to foist your misery on those who had a little zest for life and who were attempting, against all the odds, to enjoy their brief moment in the sun.

Please, all you ban-mongers living amongst us, just go and hide and stay in your safe spaces and leave the rest of us, the majority, alone. As the saying goes, life’s a journey and, as it seems we’ve only been issued with one-way tickets, most folk will be doing what they can to travel it well and enjoy the ride.

Quote;  Mandy Hale.

“You’ll learn, as you get older, that rules are made to be broken. Be bold enough to live life on your terms, and never, ever apologize for it. Go against the grain, refuse to conform, take the road less travelled instead of the well-beaten path. Laugh in the face of adversity, and leap before you look. Dance as though EVERYBODY is watching. March to the beat of your own drummer. And stubbornly refuse to fit in.”

And Then A Liquid...

While my little nest of vipers was indulging her hobby of collecting various objects from the pound store, none of which we need, never did need and never will need, I was left to my own devices and found something close to the checkout area and, I hasten to add, I’m probably miles behind the curve with this ‘discovery’.

E-cigarette liquids. I perused the display and amongst the usual cherry, chocolate and sole-of-left-boot flavours, found one I assumed to be bog standard tobacco, at 16mg, as it was called Butlers which I assumed to be a play on words for Lambert and Butlers cigarettes. Are these liquids really a pound a pop? Give my head a shake; it’s a pound store, right? Should I try a bottle? Why not? I told myself; it being me that asked the question of myself.

So, well, - and apologies if I’ve missed any other forms of starting a paragraph - with my ‘useful’ pound purchase and her ten of tat, off home it was and yesterday I tried the Butler one pound liquid. All I can say is that, for me, it works. The taste is just neutral, if that’s how to describe basically no taste at all, but, as us smokers and vapours like to state, it gave a satisfying throat-hit and all-in-all replicates wot I want it to replicate.

I now have to wrestle with the dilemma  of deciding between the two, to me, virtually identical liquids delivering virtually the same sensation; the one costing me ten pounds for four bottles, or the other costing ten pounds for ten bottles. I need time in a quiet environment to mull that one over I guess.

And Then, Questions...

It would seem that not all the nutters out there are running about with pointy things. Some are, apparently, holding down pretty good jobs in that much loved NHS and ‘running’ a children’s hospital. I’m sure there are many other nutters in high office in other places, but these nutters just happen to have broken cover.

Part of their job is, apparently, attempting to turn the roads round the hospital into no smoking or vaping areas. Yup, the roads; that area where cars, trucks and busses run around endlessly emitting noxious fumes, need to become, in their weird alternative dimension, no smoking or vaping areas.

This, they dribble, will make the hospital a friendlier place to visit. I’m betting it’d be a whole hell of a lot more friendly without the sort of sorry folk who spend their sad days dreaming up and proposing this sort of nonsense. Do these people ever listen to themselves?

Mr Puddlecote covers it in all its sad detail so, rather than repeating, bob over there, if you haven’t already, for the sorry story and then you can follow his link to have fun with take part in the hospitals survey so they may better come to understand how crazy they be.

Personally, I’d rather confront a knife wielding nutter, a nutter who most likely knows and accepts the fact he’s nuts, than have to attempt to talk a scintilla of reason into these nutters in high places who fully believe they, by dint of their high office, also have the high ground and who’s motto may well be, “Today the carpark; tomorrow we take the streets.”

The fellows jumping about with pointy things are now instantly classed by the police and media, obviously experts in the field, as suffering with mental health issues. However, these fellows wanting to ban smoking and vaping on busy, traffic polluted roads are classed as caring visionaries.

And Then A Refinement...

Further to yesterdays post, may I offer refinements to the idea of UAUT and  a little look a tad further into the future.

A method will be required to simplify the management of VAT and UAUT so lets just lump VAT and UAUT into one item; VATUAUT - trips off the tongue does it not? This will make it easy to administer and, spookily, the businesses own bit, UAUT, will be just marginally higher than the government VAT bit - to cover administration costs you understand. Shops win, win; doubles all round!!

With advances in technology, we may one day see the introduction of some form of scanner, at the entrances to all shops and stores, that scans for the presence of any smoking or vaping materials concealed about the voluminous folds of our outer garments, traces of tobacco on breath and/or the lingering odour on clothing, and trigger a significantly higher UAUT rate on those bad, bad folk.

As for snowflake safe spaces, there’s a way to alleviate the need for store management to provide these spaces and also increase profits by maximising check-out and till throughput speed. How? Well, install turnstiles at entry points. So? So, we already have contactless bank cards, right? So as you’re scanned for tobacco and such, you’re bank card will be scanned and processed. Should you be in possession of a maxed-out card, as you approach the turnstile it won’t open. What do you do in such circumstances? Push it, right? The maxed card holder, upon attempting this manoeuvre, will  receive a short sharp shock of electrickery accompanied by electrically generated laughter and the loud message, ‘Maxed card alert. Entry denied.’ and more laughter. They will then, embarrassingly, have to withdraw to their own safe space. And no amount of, “But I want it NOW!” will get ‘em in.

This will for sure speed-up checking out as the chance of being stuck behind someone repeatedly inserting or waving their card in or over those key pad thingies and hoping the ‘No Funds Available’ message  will magically change, on the thirtieth attempt, to ‘You’re cool. Double up if you want.’ will be a thing of the past. Till throughput maximised.

This could also have the knock-on effect of, possibly, instilling a little financial discipline into the card holders after a couple of embarrassing entry refusals. Again, win, win.

Can’t be done? Think how much technology we now take for granted that we thought, not all that long ago, would never, ever be possible.

And Then, A Quick Conversation...

You may be familiar with that TPD thingy, otherwise catchily known as the Tobacco Products Directive, and its possible ramifications on the fledgling e-cigarette business or the death thereof. Tobacco users please believe me when I say I also feel your pain as I used to be one and if smokes weren’t so damn expensive, would no doubt still be one, but this is just for Vaparians.

The other day I chanced to be in one of they fledgling e-cig shops and after making my purchase, seeing no further customers present, took a moment to ask the owner what was going to happen to his shop now May was upon us. As it was the fourth and apparently StarWars day, I threw in, “By the way, May the fourth be with you.”
”Whu...? The shop? Business as usual.” He said.

Please remember that what I type here is from the little he related to me, there was more that I’ve forgotten, and I haven’t the patience to verify any of it so just take it as it is. All I can say is, as it’s this fellows business, we can assume he must’ve done some digging.

He said that the sale of kits, meaning a battery and a tank, could be restricted so all his shop would be selling now was  tanks, up to the buyer what goes in the tank. They may want a tank for a small goldfish, right? and batteries. He stated he could find absolutely nothing that prohibits or restricts the sale of small tanks or batteries of any description. Again, if the customer takes a tank and a battery home and glues ‘em together, what can he do?

Tanks, it seems, will be restricted to 2ml capacity and he’s already selling these. What he’s also selling, for those requesting something a tad bigger - for a bigger fish? is 5ml tanks. These suckers come with a rubber grommet cunningly placed half way into the tank of dimensions that reduces the tank to a 2ml useable side and a 2ml void – also trickily known as a leak trap. He stated he sells these tanks with the rider to the customer to take great care as the grommet is very easily to removed, thus creating a 5ml tank, and that’s very naughty and not really allowed...

As the gentleman said, any regulations, especially EU regulations, are so extremely poorly put together that they invariably come complete with escape holes as big as the Channel Tunnel through which the directives were delivered.

Time will tell and we shall see but maybe, just maybe, the picture for Vaparians could be a little brighter than that dull landscape under a thunderstorm presently being painted.

And Then, See You EU...

You probably already have, but if you haven’t please drop into Velvet Glove, Iron Fist and learn all about the EU ‘plan’ to tax vaping. Whoa!!! What a shock!!! We didn’t see that one coming eh?

How many vapours do they reckon there are in the UK at present? Last I saw the figure was in excess of two million. I’m only guessing here, but I figure that would now be two million confirmed Leave the EU-be-doo votes in the bag. That may be true but I’m sure, even if we manage to escape the EU, our own home grown thugs will still be salivating at the thought of money for nothing through vaping taxes.

And Then The Cost Conundrum....

I’ve touched on this briefly before somewhere and that is that all the smoking and vaping Blogs and reportage in the press on the subjects always, relating to vaping, rotates back to the ban brigade’s idea that vaping will normalise smoking and kids who have decided to use electric cigarettes will enjoy it and thus move on through the mystic gateway to proper cigarettes.

It seems everybody, on both sides of the argument, continually quote the many and varied ‘studies’ conducted, for both sides of the ‘debate’, in support of their argument that it either leads to tobacco or it doesn’t. With graphs of course; but that’s only common sense. If, and it’s a big if for most of us, you follow the links to these studies and then attempt to make any sense of them, you’ll soon find you’ve wasted more of your time than if you’d chosen to watch Big Brother instead.

Why won’t a pro vaping advocate, with a platform, just ask the next anti they come up against one simple question when the anti states that vaping leads kids, or indeed big people, to smoke. And that’s the cost differential. Simples.

Over a relatively short period I’ve done one of they study thingies and my findings are aweso... as expected.

For my study, an unscientific study owing absolutely nothing to synthetic meta-analysis, I used some figures readily available on the Web-a-Net.

I buy liquid at £10 for four 10ml bottles thus £2.50 for one 10ml bottle. A further search suggests that one 10ml bottle is the equivalent to about five packs of smokes. Yet more research suggests an average price for one pack o’ smokes in the UK is £8 ish.

Are these banning bananas seriously saying that kids, on pocket money{?}, who vape are going to decide to drop a  £0.50 for twenty habit and pass through the mystic gateway  in favour of the  £8 for twenty habit? Seriously? Money has to be the simple rebuttal to the vaping gateway to smoking argument has it not? However, a money  gateway could be there for the reverse argument; from the real thing to vapour. Sorry, no graphs as I can’t find my crayons.

While I’m here, let’s not forget that, compared to tobacco, vaping is so much better for you. Whoa! Hold on just a fun lovin’ minute! According to the Puritans, Timidadians, banners of all things enjoyable, nothing, absolutely nothing, is good for you. Everything is bad, bad, bad and there are just varying degrees of badness, right?  So vaping is, allegedly, just less bad for you. And far less expensive. I rest my graphless research.

And The End Of That....

As 2015 comes creeping to an end, it was interesting to read this bit at The Counterfactual. Through the piece are links to various ‘news’-papers covering the ‘findings’ of this latest scary scientific research, all using headlines along the lines of, E-cigarettes are NO better than regular smoking: Devices can 'cause cancer even when they're nicotine FREE'  And with that headline, and some cut and paste, the inquisitive, questioning, thirst for truth investigative journalism ends. File the ‘story’, grab coat, say bu-by and head for the pub.

With someone in the comments alleging that those stop smoking patchy, gummy makers Phizzer, or whatever they’re called, may have partly funded the ‘research’, one has to marvel at the timing of the release of the scary ‘findings’ to the compliant MSM. I mean right before the new year when folk may be considering quitting tobacco and using an e-ciggy to do it rather than patches or gum. I mean, how spooky is that then?

I did like the comment below by Fleabag, nice handle by the way, which says much of what I’ve mentioned here a few times but far better. The truth is out there hidden between the two extreme arguments on any subject but you have to dig to find it. And how many bother? I bet the majority of folk out there are headline grabbers only. Surprisingly, the articles linked to through The Counterfactual piece, are allowing comments.

“What saddens me most is the lack of right to reply. As pointed out “junk science proves nothing” doesn’t make headlines, and the truth has no outlet outside of the blogs and social media that only the converted will see.
Of the thousands (perhaps millions) who have seen Knapton’s irresponsible headline, how many will see the real facts behind the story, and how many will decide against trying an ecig this new year?
For the record, I was one of the (civil) challengers of her story on social media today, and I was quickly blocked for it.”

As if by magic, the good Ripper has left a comment to a previous post that just must come to front of house as it fits well with this post. And you’ll love the last sentence;

Mac, one thing I refuse to believe is that Puritans are 'twisted'. They know exactly what they are doing. Their use of buzz words such as 'normalize' and 'gateway' are in fact what is known as neuro linguistics, a concept first spewed forth from Common Purpose. Neuro linguistics is a tool to help them in persuading others to obey. Have you noticed the urgent, dramatic wording they use to describe none existent dangers? That is meant to frighten people into doing their bidding.
They do not care about your health or lifestyle. All they care about is that you get your nicotine fix from their specified dealer, thus keeping the trough full for them. They are not 'Puritans'. I favour Dick Puddlecote's definition - 'Trouser Stuffing Rent Seekers'.
Anyhoo, before the networks get clogged, we at Altzheimer's UK wish you a very happy Easter, and have a great 1983.

Best wishes to you all for 2016, or whatever year or season you’re heading for, and especially to all those truth-seekers out there in Web world. My new year resolution? More a belief with regard to the BBC, ITV, Sky, all the ‘free’-press and any government spokesperson of any persuasion – even if they don’t actually speak; just the oft used quote below;
