I see various folk and the media are having another problem with the use of English as far as I can make out regards the bit o’ bother the other day.
And the bit o’ bother would be the nutter, apparently, with a knife throwing twelve gauge cartridges into the grounds of Buckingham Palace. All quickly reported as not terror related.
Please excuse me if I beg to differ.
The couple living there are well into their seventies but let’s imagine this had happened in some old dears home out here; she looks up from her TV and sees a bloke with a knife start to throw twelve gauge cartridges into he garden. You think that would terrify her and strike terror into her heart? See where I’m going? The fine line between Terrorist and Terror. Thus in a subtle bending of meaning; after an investigation it was found it wasn’t a terrorist attack but just a nutter with a knife, some cartridges but no gun so just ‘armless’ fun.
Really, someone threatening others is, to varying degrees, wanting to infliction terror into their target so by definition must be a terrorist, right? Bloody English eh?
In other ‘news’ I saw some young thing reporting on a fire some place, with the comment that smoke was seen going up into the air. Who knew smoke went up eh? Oh, and it wasn’t terror related. Unless you were stuck in whatever it was wot was burning that is...
Quote; Kurt Vonnegut.
“True terror is to wake up one morning and discover that your high school class is running the country.”
