I find that I have very little printing to do these days but a couple of days ago I did indeed need to print an item. Guess wot, I was informed the magenta cartridge was
empty. Whoa! How did that happen? Does in evaporate over time? It is, however, the main ingredient in any colour printing is it not?
Anyhoo, off to get a new cartridge and as I had to pass a branch of a well-known
appliance and tech store, I pulled in to see wot was on offer.
A quick look confirmed my thoughts so I continued to the little printer peripheral shop and got a set of five cartridge refills for pretty much the same
price of one branded cartridge at the big store.
One has to wonder how many folk, needing a set of five and doing no looking about, settle for digging out just a phew more notes for a new printer instead?

If you don't need colour printing a small desktop laser is more economic. Drums and toner last a long time and (if you pick the right brand) cheaper third party items are available.
Mac,
If you're just need a rare doc printed, it's much cheap take the doc to a print service. Or, for free, send a doc, pdf etc. via email. Make a pdf, simply 'print to file' instead print to printer. I think (not sure) but the windoze has a driver where you can specify type file.
Those cartridges been scams years. The first were Epson - they start to sell printers at a loss, then they recoup the money on sales cartridges at massive inflate prices.
HP's scam method, when the printer report 'run out ink'. But the cartridges were still half full ink.
Epson the printer stops working, and reports 'waste ink pad end of service life'. This is a just a bit of sponge, the cartridge spray ink into the waste pad to clean printer heads every cartridges park. Some assume when the report mentions 'end service life', they tend sling and buy a new printer. Of course, the easy fixed - just strip the printer and replace a bit sponge, or just rip out and use without a pad (but without a pad will make a mess). And doesn't mean 'buy new' a pad - just a cut a bit sponge.
Some band printers you can the reset the pad replace report, then the printer it starts working again. That's just simple key combine press or pull the plug for about 15 seconds.
DiscoveredJoys,
Good idea. Sadly, I’m at the age when, as I need to print only upon the rising of a blue moon, I’ll stick with wot I’ve got now. Unbranded refills do the trick.
Ripper,
Good to hear from you old friend.
Yup, most of my printing is to PDF and save to a USB drive solely for that purpose. There’s very little I need to print to paper these daze. And ever less as I get yet older...
As for the printer inks, yes a monumental scam that I’m sure grabs countless folk daily.
And yes, so much can be ‘corrected’ with the dexterous pressing of various keys.
Stay well buddy.
