And Then, Wot A Shock...

I seem to remember that a little bit after a while ago various fully foil clad conspiracy nutters put forward an idea from their bunkers. And that idea was that co-co was part one of a really big plan and a bit of a mystery war was part two. The nutters also put forward the looney idea that if adverse effects from the experimental chemi cocktail proliferated to an extent that it was becoming too hard to keep the lid on such cases, then bad lad Vlad would be accused of engaging in the use of bio and chemi weapons in U-krankie. Man, these conspiracy nutters really are nuts, eh?
However, look wot’s just happened; Phizzy has been legally forced to release many, many pages of their documentation relating to the hurried testing of their elixir of life and guess wot, page after page after page of actual and possible adverse effects are now available to read.
Right on queue, warnings from governments that mad Vlad is seriously thinking of using plague weapons and a favourable – unfavourable - wind could spread these dirty droplets throughout the planet to have a greater or lesser effect on populations.
Increasing co-co jab bad and fatal reactions? How ridiculous screech the MSM, of course not, it’s all down to Vlad so let’s move quickly on to part three.
These conspiracy nutters really need to look at double-coating their windows with foil as well, eh?
Say wot now? It’s the end of the World as we know it?  Okay, here’s a sing along for y’all. Pardon? Oh, come on! The words are on screen for heavens sake.

Addendumadodad; a note to A K Haart and others; after doing the bit below I could make Irfanview the default for .jpg an’ such. Do the bit below then go to Default Apps. No guarantee, but it worked for me. For how long, I know not.
Settings>Apps>Apps and Features>Microsoft Photo, page down and click on Reset. Then go to Default Apps and - if it works for you - you can now set your choice of image viewer to be the default. I wish you luck.

“Regarding conspiracy theorists: So many people calling out others for being 'conspiracy theorists' serves to prove that very point; there is a conspiracy.”

  1. Mac,
I'm assuming here that W11 has not significantly changed from W10.

Have you tried going to Settings>Apps/Default Apps? In there, you get email, music player, photo viewer etc.. If there is no default app you just get an icon with a + on it but all the apps will have the icons of those currently as default. After installing your pic viewer (the settings in the viewer should be able to set it as default) click on the icon of what should initially be the MS Photo Viewer and you get a popup with all eligible program icons. Click on your choice and the job is a good 'un.

Irfanview is probably the best and most versatile image viewer in existence but as a default viewer its far too bloated and slow. Therefore I use Irfanview only if I want to manipulate images such as making slideshows or to view strange filetypes such as from a CAD or 3D printing program.

May I recommend JPEGView as an alternate default viewer, its very small, very fast and has a 'minimal' GUI which only appears if you double-click on a picture file. It doesn't need any installation, just stick it in a folder somewhere. You don't even need a shortcut, just set it as default. And its open source. Try it, you'll like it.

Also, did you know that in W10 at least, you don't need to use the settings applet. Yep, the old Control Panel is still there. Look in:

    Start Menu>Windows System

In Control Panel, click on Default Programs and you will be able to set default programs by file type or program.

If you set by program, you set that program for every file type that it can open. If you choose by file type you set the default program by individual file type. For example, to make your viewer open ALL jpeg images you would have to associate two file types, .jpg and .jpeg to your viewer.

You can also set Autoplay in here.

Control Panel should still be up front IMO. Its much simpler than the settings applet.

  2. Ripper,
Yup again, install Irfanview, select all file formats, run it, check files and several are grayed out. Go to settings, no jpg and others.
Yup, its all changed in Billy 11. The thing is, there was no sign of some of the image file formats, say .jpg. Just not there to associate anything with. Right click - open with - take your pick but always use this progream? Nothing there.
Then I just tried a Photo Reset, went back to Default Apps and those ‘lost’ file formats were back and I was able to change the default to Irfanview.
Just about to give your recommendation a look-see.

  3. Ripper,
also back is the right click an image, select viewer and the 'Always use....' is also back. The Reset key could be a key to remember...

  4. Mac,
I've not seen W11 yet. Is this the one?

  5. Mac,
The 'Always use' option never went away. Its just buried deeper in W10. If I right-click on an image I select 'Open With' from the menu and a submenu pops up containing all the registered apps that I can open the file with - JPEGView, Paint.NET etc, and at the bottom of the submenu I have 'Choose Another App'. If i select that, a small window pops up with the same programs listed, but a 'More Apps' link at the bottom. Clicking this link loads more programs into the list, and the link at the bottom now says 'Find Other Apps on This PC', which opens a dialog box to search for the program if its not in the list. Whilst all this is going on, there's a check box at the bottom of the list marked 'Always Use This App To Open .jpg Files'.

I know how you oldies keep forgetting things so have you tried seeing if the Control Panel is still there? If you can't see it, go to the Search Box in the task bar and just type 'Contr' and if its there it will appear in the search results. Just click on it to run. You'll find things like setting defaults much easier in Control Panel.

Me? I don't care what I forget. I'm refusing to admit I'm old until I start wearing cardigans and have a liking for tartan zip-up bootee slippers. I might also smell of wee by then.

And as I've already told God - if I can't take my bike I ain't going.

  6. Mac,
Not spamming, honest. You said you like portable programs. Boy, have I found a good one for you on my travels. You're gonna love this one.

winPenPack - All manner of fully portable programs in one pack. There's everything you'd ever need in there, all open source and portable.

    https://sourceforge.net/projects/winpenpack/

Remember buddy, you heard it here first!

While I'm on the subject, Source Forge is well worth a few hours going through to see what's on there. Click on Open Source at the top, go down to the bottom of the menu and choose 'All Software'. Set the filter to Windows and away you go browsing all the gems.

If anything takes your interest, be sure to check the date of the last update. Some programs haven't been updated for a few years so that tells me that they are no longer supported.

  7. Ripper,
First comment: Yup I know it. Also a site I’m sure you’re familiar with.
    https://portableapps.com/apps

Second comment: Right click, page down to the end of the choices, Nothing. Resetting Win Photo and the choice is back.
Control Panel is there. Not sure if file association is there at time of typing.
Third comment: Yes, that is Billy 11 Settings. Use the search box, as shown, no sign of jpg etc. Again, reset Win Photo and it’s back. I do believe this lack of file association was down to me uninstalling a bunch of Billy bloat ware first rattle out of the box which could’ve corrupted some file associations. Right now all is running smoothly; even after a couple of restarts.
Old age? Less said the better.... Now, regards your first comment... Damn!!

  8. Mac,
On this point - "Control Panel is there. Not sure if file association is there at time of typing."

When you load Control Panel for the first time you won't see anything of use because you will have to change the View settings (scroll gadget, top right corner). On first loading these settings are in 'category' mode. Change this to 'small icons' and you'll see the 'Default Programs' applet in the right hand column.

Billy has been trying to replace the Control Panel for a few years now, with the Settings app. But the Control Panel still holds all the power user kind of stuff.

  9. Ripper,
All as you say and clicking on Default Programs takes you straight to the Settings page you see in the video you sent the link for. Round and round we go via clicks...

  10. Mac,
Sorry to hear that. I go to the old File Explorer type window where the filetypes are up front in a big list, and you only have to click on each one to assign it to a new program. I will miss the Control Panel so when I can no longer use it I'm outta here for new pastures. That new settings app is weak and awful.

I suppose you could try enabling God Mode - a super, mother of all Control Panels.

  11. Ripper,
The settings are a tad better than the video would lead you to believe.
You go ahead and load it my friend. You enjoy a challenge and it'll sure kill a few cold evenings. Now I've found the reset trick, all the software I want runs seamlessly and virus scans run right quick but that's down to a fast 'puter. All in all, I'm getting along with it - still finding the odd trick. I can live with it all no problem. That may well change as 'updates' roll in...
