And Then, Time Flies...

Is this the week Mrs May-may-be-Gone? I sure wouldn’t suggest breathe holding. What a shambles. As for that Remain march wot got seven hundred thousand million folk with blue faces – or a hundred thousand dependant on who you listen to and/or believe, if they’d formed an orderly single-file queue, I’d have happily passed along  the line punching as many as possible in the puss to help restore a little normal colour to their cheeks.

In other pointless news, I see the EU want to mess with the twice yearly ritual of turning the clocks forward the way and then back the way. All must be well with the world if this is considered of some huge import. It did, however, remind me of a snippet I stole a while ago, from where I now forget, that made me smile so if you’d like a smile here it is:

The government have told me my clocks have got to go back soon. I’ve had them for so many years now I have no idea where I got them from. If I can’t return them, will I be in trouble?

I also see Windows 10 updates are deleting - or otherwise messing - with files already on some folks computers. Sadly, I’m old enough to remember MS-DOS and using it with the Gem desktop with spreadsheets and such that ran from floppy disks and you know wot? It all did much the same then as the overloaded, over ‘engineered’ and over complex stuff does today with the advantage of little to no risk of a ‘bug’ wiping-out your work. Such is progress I guess. Equalled only by the number of times I’ve typed about it.

Bringing up the bottom, I guess you’ve seen ASH and other anti tobacco folk squirming and tying themselves in knots regarding that big cig company’s stop smoking advertising campaign? If I’ve got this right, a huge multi national tobacco company is trying to encourage their customers to quit lit tobacco and switch to hugely less harmful alternatives, right? And the anti baccy lobbies are calling this hypocrisy? How very dare these companies promote a product they wish to sell! ‘Harm’ reducing or not.

Anyhoo, isn’t that a giant leap towards wot the tobacco prohibitionists want? Or is it just a tad too close a step for comfort towards the reduction in the use of lit tobacco which would obviously mean they could pack-up and pull-out and shut-down their revenue streams? They’re not going to let that happen are they? Man, these folk are beyond sad. Tell you wot ASH and others; form another queue for a good slapping. Pardon? Where to form this queue you say? Anywhere; I can travel.

So to end on an extremely sad quote. Take careful note you out there of less advanced years. However, if you are of advanced years, I hope you get it out of your head before it’s time for bed.

Quote;  Haruki Murakami.

“Unfortunately, the clock is ticking, the hours are going by. The past increases, the future recedes. Possibilities decreasing, regrets mounting.”

  1. I remember MS-DOS, DR-DOS and a 40 megabyte hard drive which was enough for all my spreadsheets and documents. It lasted for years.

  2. A K Haart,
I well remember getting myself, at great expense, a portable 40 meg hard drive. Parallel lead and about the size and weight of a house brick. And now? Devices smaller than your thumb with the capacity to hold everything you’d need to run a small country. The brick never let me down but those thumb drives do seem to have a tendency to just decide not to work which would be a bit of a nuisance if running a small country from it.
